Researchers in the field of psychology and cognitive science believe that OOBE is a “hallucinatory construct that arises from different psychological factors.” Well…what does that mean exactly? One of the early OOBE researchers, Edmund Gurney, noted that OOBE are created by the subject’s memory and imagination processes and are very similar, if not identical, to the processes that lead to dreams. This is an interesting theory, especially given the recent research by the OOBE Institute out of California, that has proven that OOBE can be induced through proper sleep training and that lucid dreams can be produced that resemble OOBE perfectly. Did you know there are some major celebrities out there who have used lucid dreaming as a source of creative inspiration? It is no surprise (at least to me and anyone who has chanced to walk upon a Salvador Dali exhibit at a museum) but the famous surrealist painter commonly used lucid dreams to inspire his works of art. Even though he was painting well before the theory of lucid dream research became well known, Dali would use dream incubation techniques to implant ideas into his dreams.
